Frequently asked questions
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a research-based auditory intervention developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, grounded in Polyvagal Theory. It uses specially filtered music to stimulate the nervous system and support regulation, safety, and social engagement. SSP is often used to reduce symptoms related to anxiety, trauma, stress, sensory sensitivity, and emotional dysregulation.
SSP may be beneficial for individuals experiencing anxiety, trauma-related symptoms, emotional regulation difficulties, sensory processing challenges, chronic stress, and relational or social engagement difficulties. It is not a stand-alone treatment, but a powerful adjunct to therapy that supports nervous system regulation and resilience.
Yes—SSP is highly effective when delivered through telehealth. The protocol was specifically designed to be administered remotely and is routinely and successfully used via secure virtual platforms. As long as the client has over-ear headphones (not earbuds) and a phone or device capable of downloading the SSP app, the therapeutic effects are the same as in-person delivery. There is no reduction in effectiveness when SSP is completed virtually under clinician guidance.
